Waterbury FF Jeff Trota died on May 18, 2005, with 21 years service. For the first 17 years of his career, this had been enough service time required to retire with benefits. With 3 years remaining to become eligible for a pension, the Waterbury CT.,oversight board added 5 more years for firefighter pension eligibility. Jeff was diagnosed with cancer soon thereafter. Negotiations commenced with the city to exempt Jeff and his family from the new minimum of 25 years, allowing him to retire with 20 years service. This is the same benefit the oversight board gave police officers with more than 10 years seniority. The union was willing to agree to waive any precedent, just to ensure Jeff's family received the pension and medical benefits. Three months of bargaining produced a denial by the city. In 3 years, Jeff's family will receive about half of what Jeff was eligible for as a pension. They will receive no medical benefits. Please help them.
