Gentlemen: Start your V-8 engines. The second annual Lt. Kenny Fowler Muscle Car Show roars back into town next month. The event, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Pentucket Regional Middle School, 22 Main St., is being organized by Sgt. Dan Cena of the West Newbury Police Department, as a way to honor a fallen friend and raise money for the local foundation that bears his name.
With names like Cyclone, Barracuda, Cobra, Thunderbird and Charger 500, the term muscle car typically refers to cars built during the late 1960s and early 1970s that were high on horsepower and torque and low on fuel efficiency and cheesy gadgetry. This year's muscle car show runs from 1 to 6 p.m. and is free to car owners and spectators, with donations to the Lt. Kenneth Fowler Foundation gratefully accepted. No pre-registration is required.
"Just drive on down," said Fowler's sister, Mary, who oversees her brother's foundation. Last year's event attracted more than 350 cars, "a great turnout for the first year and on a day of sweltering heat," she said.
The muscle flexing ramps up another notch when Cena's older brother, John Cena, of World Wrestling Entertainment fame, arrives at 11 a.m. to sign personalized photographs as he did at last year's event. Tickets for autographs must be purchased in advance between 9 and 10:30 that morning. No personalized items will be autographed. The cost for a signed photo is $15; only a limited number will be sold. At the end of the day, one lucky winner will drive off in style in a 1969 Chevelle. Anyone interested in buying a chance to win the classic car can purchase a raffle ticket on sale now for $100 at the West Newbury Public Safety Complex, 401 Main St. Raffle ticket sales are limited to 500.
"With only 500 tickets being sold, this could be your chance to own a piece a American Muscle History," Dan Cena said. In the event that they don't sell out beforehand, remaining tickets will be sold at the show with a winner drawn at the conclusion of the day. The winning ticket holder does not have to be present at the time of the drawing. The car being raffled off is currently parked on the lawn in front of the safety complex. All types of vehicles are welcome to enter the car show. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, including "Loudest Exhaust," "Best in Class," "Most Likely to get Pulled Over" and the "Cena Award" — chosen jointly by the Cena brothers. In addition to trophies, good food, drinks, music, T-shirts, a 50/50 raffle and other prizes will round out the day.
Fowler said her brother's passion for all things mechanical was well known. "Cars were one of Kenny's earliest loves — one of the first things he shared with our dad," she said. All proceeds from the event and the car raffle benefit the Lt. Kenneth Fowler Foundation, which raises money to support the community, particularly in the areas of public education and public safety. The 37-year-old Prospect Street resident and lieutenant in the town's call fire department died suddenly in his home of an apparent heart attack in December 2007.
This year, the foundation established in his memory awarded two scholarships to Pentucket graduates pursuing careers in fire science, public service or a mechanical trade and purchased four automated external defibrillators for the high school athletic department. It also donated funds to offset costs for the Pentucket High School Marching Band's trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Memorial Day parade, supported the Pentucket Athletic Association and contributed to Senior Celebration, the annual all-night drug and alcohol-free party for graduating seniors. But the yearly car show is more than just a way to grow the foundation, Fowler said.
"It's a great community event, which we really don't have a lot of in West Newbury," she said. Ultimately, Fowler said, finding ways to foster community spirit is probably the best way to honor her brother.
For more information about the car show or the foundation, contact the EMAIL.

Joanne and I created our donation web page for the September 26 Hope Walk for the Vernon Cancer Canter at the Newton Wellesley Hospital. Joining Joanne in the walk will be my Dad is is also a cancer survivor. The purpose here is to raise money for patients to receive the high quality care necessary to endure both the physical and emotional challenges that cancer presents to patients. Dr James Vernon is a strong advocate for the best health care for patients regardless of their ability to pay. He saved my life and just a few months ago operated on Joanne so we feel a strong obligation to do what we can for the Center.
I have attached the link to Joanne's donation page and please keep in mind we understand that the economy is awful and some people may not be able to afford monetary donations. Even if you come out just to cheer Joanne and Dad along with myself and Mom, that would mean the world to us!!
Thank you all for your friendship and caring for our family.
Sincerely, Joanne and Stephen Walsh

Portsmouth Firefighter Sarah Fox was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 9, 2007. She was also 36 ½ weeks pregnant with twins. Twelve hours later the twins were born making a family of seven. After several setbacks Sarah fought through the many challenges and treatments and beat the odds returning to work in January 2009.
Just over a year later Sarah developed a pain in her hip which was discovered to be cancer. Sarah, her husband Matt and their 5 children and family are faced with the fight against cancer once again. As a gesture of our support for Sarah and to bring awareness to breast cancer Portsmouth Fire is going pink.
The pink breast cancer support ribbon has been personalized to show our support of Sarah. The 173 is Sarah’s number affixed on her fire helmet identifying her, the bravest describes how she faces this fight, and support is what we can all do to help. Displaying the decal shows not only that we love and support Sarah but we support finding a cure for a disease that tears families apart.
We hope you can join us by displaying a decal too. Two decals are available, a small 2 ¼” helmet decal for $5.00 and another 5” suitable for your car for $10.00. All proceeds go directly to Sarah and her family to help them during this challenging time. If you choose to include a personal note to Sarah we will be sure to get them to her for you.
To purchase a decal stop in at any Portsmouth Fire Station or mail a check with the attached order form to the Portsmouth Firefighters Chartable Association at 170 Court St, Portsmouth, NH 03801and we will send your decals right away. CLICK HERE FOR ORDER FORM.

We want to make this a reality by putting together the first inaugural North Branford Road Race dedicated to our son. All proceeds from the race will go toward Matt's Mission Fund which was designed to benefit students in need from North Branford.
I would love to see everyone register for this event and help make it successful and fun. Please visit my web page Click Here
Register, donate or volunteer today. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Best Regards and Thanks, Mark Riordan

From the Ashway, RI Volunteer FD:

This was the first "real" fire engine that we bought. It is a 1941 Ford/Buffalo. It was sold about 20 years ago and the last we knew it might have been in Ohio. We would love to find it and get it back. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From Steve Walsh:
Hi all, I am writing to ask for your help in donating to a very worthy cause. A young 9 year old girl who is the niece of several Brookline Police Officers and Firefighters was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome at birth. On March 7, 2010, there will be an event at the Brookline Gym 66 Tappan Street called a Zumbathon to raise money for research. Here is an overview of Prader-Willi Syndrome:
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common known genetic cause of life-threatening obesity in children. Although the cause is complex it results from an abnormality on the 15th chromosome. It occurs in males and females equally and in all races. Prevalence estimates have ranged from 1:8,000 to 1:25,000 with the most likely figure being 1:15,000.
PWS typically causes low muscle tone, short stature if not treated with growth hormone, incomplete sexual development, and a chronic feeling of hunger that, coupled with a metabolism that utilizes drastically fewer calories than normal, can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity. The food compulsion makes constant supervision necessary. Average IQ is 70, but even those with normal IQs almost all have learning issues. Social and motor deficits also exist. At birth the infant typically has low birth weight for gestation, hypotonia (weak muscles), and difficulty sucking due to the hypotonia which can lead to a diagnosis of failure to thrive. The second stage ("thriving too well"), has a typical onset between the ages of two and five, but can be later. The hyperphagia (extreme unsatisfied drive to consume food) lasts throughout the lifetime. Children with PWS have sweet and loving personalities, but this phase is also characterized by increased appetite, weight control issues, and motor development delays along with some behavior problems and unique medical issues.
Please check the Box 714 website for information and registration for this event. Also, donations can be made by making out a check to:

Please, don't throw that American flag into the trash!
Do you have a old, frazzled flag that's no longer fit for display, that's laying around your office or home and you just don't know what to do with it? Then send it to us! We will properly dispose of it according to federal laws.
Who are we? Visit our website at www.kitchentablegang.org for details about us and what we are doing to help veterans and our soldiers overseas, plus giving proper respect for ol'glory.
The Kitchen Table Gang Trust will retire your tattered, worn out and frayed American flags with full honors! Anything else is desecration! Just send your flags to the not-for-profit Kitchen Table Gang Trust, 42922 Avenue 12, Madera, CA 93638-8866 and we'll dispose of your flags in a proper and dignified manner with full honors and dignity pursuant to the United States Flag Code Section 8K (PL93-344), TITLE 36, CHAPTER 10, UNITED STATES CODE . The Kitchen Table Gang (formed over 16 years ago) is a "rag-tag" bunch of patriotic military types helping hospitalized veterans and our soldiers and Marines overseas with "Care" packages.
Our flag retirement ceremonies are held on Flag Day, June 14th each year and are conducted by MGySgt Daniel Kelley USMC and an all volunteer military honor guard with Eagle Boy Scouts assisting. The Kitchen Table Gang Trust also has a nationally recognized educational program for our young people and students, teaching them the history, traditions and respect for our national emblem.
When you send us a flag, please enclose a donation for this service which allows us to continue and expand our many patriotic programs. We do good things with your contributions (just ask any veteran or military service organization). We are located at the junction of Highway 41 and Avenue 12 just down from the world famous red, white, and blue barn (with the fifty golden stars on the roof) on the way to Yosemite National Park.
Please, send us your flags!

I received this message from a local children's mentoring service and thought I would post it in hopes that someone would be able to help out. If you are interested, please contact Angie at Click for Email.
I am reaching out to area Fire Rescue Departments with the hope that you might help me recruit a volunteer mentor for a young man who is very passionate about fire fighting , through our Big Friends/Little Friends Program.
BM is in 7th grade and lives with his mother. He has very little contact with his father who has since remarried. BM doesn't have much male support in his life. A firefighter would help instill many values in his life as well as integrity and character while acting as a role model and supporting him through some of life's challenges.
It would be great to be able to match him with someone that is as passionate about the field as he is. BM collects model fire trucks and a myriad of other firefighting paraphernalia.
I was hoping that you might be able to assist me in locating a possible mentor for him or point me in the right direction.
If possible, feel free to forward my email to anyone within your network that might be able to assist in this matter. I recruit mentors in any field - ALL the time (particularly for our MCP program, which matches Mentors with kids whose parents are incarcerated) but for this particular young man, someone in your field would have a tremendous impact in his life.
I truly appreciate your time and consideration as well as anything you can do to help me out in this matter!

From the Duxbury Firefighters:
The Duxbury Firefighters have formed a great relationship with FDNY Battalion Chief John Salka and are happy to help him spread the word on this very worthwhile cause.
After much planning and effort a September 11th Commemorative Coin has been struck to coincide with the 10 year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. This coin is a fundraising project undertaken by FDNY Battalion Chief John Salka and a committee of other firefighters and their friends to fund and support several charitable organizations including the W5 Firefighters World Trade Center Fund, The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation and the FDNY Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Go to our website (www.september11anniversaryfund.com) for more information on the charitable funds and to get a look at the beautiful new coin. The coin costs $20 and every penny will be dispersed to the listed funds. This is an opportunity for every firefighter in America to honor and remember the FDNY Brothers lost on 9/11 and to support the great work that the folks at the Burn Center Foundation, VFW and the W5 Firefighters WTC Fund are doing. Take a look at the attached ad and post it where every firefighter will have a chance to see it. Thanks!

The law requires the American flag be lowered in tribute on only a few days each year. Very appropriately, one of these days is the observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, this year, on October 4, 2009. We hope to see you there but if not, hopefully at minimum, your flag will be lowered.
On October 16, 2001, President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring the American flag to be lowered to half-staff on all Federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law 107-51 requires this action to occur annually in conjunction with observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
Encourage your local community to follow the Federal Government's example. When you lower your flag this year, you will recognize the brave men and women who died in the Line of Duty.
You may also want to ask your local officials to include lowering the flag in a proclamation recognizing the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
