DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Belmont is located seven miles north of Boston, has a population of over 25,000 people, and an area of 4.66 square miles. The town is primarily a residential community with some light industry. Commuters can access the town through several local routes as well as through bus lines and the commuter rail of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. There are no emergency departments within the town, but patients may opt to be transported to one of the hospitals in nearby Cambridge or Waltham.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Belmont Fire Department responds from two stations staffing three engines, one ladder, and an ambulance. The three stations the department responded from in 1993 are no longer operational, with two new fire stations being opened in 2006. All companies now respond from those two stations. Fire Alarm is operated by civilian fire alarm operators and the frequency of 154.130 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of E-One, Mack, and Seagrave. Today the department is primarily all E-One apparatus. The color scheme has remained white/red. Still on the roster from 1993 are Engine 2's 1988 E-One and Ladder 1's 1979 Seagrave. Both are in reserve status. Belmont responds to medical emergencies with a BLS ambulance. ALS is provided by a private ambulance service.
