BRAINTREE

 


DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Braintree is located ten miles south of Boston, has a population of over 35,000 people, and an area of 14.41 square miles. The town is very diverse with a mix of homes, apartment buildings, commerical and industrial businesses. Braintree has a number of shopping centers including a large indoor mall. The town is intersected by both I-93 and U.S. Route 3. The city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and has a number of bus lines in addition to the start/end of the redline subway service. Braintree does not have a hospital in town, but patients may opt to be transported to nearby Quincy or Weymouth.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Braintree Fire Department has signigicantly upgraded it's equipment over the last fifteen years. Apparatus responds from three stations. Fire Alarm is still operated by firefighters at the headquarters station and the frequency of 483.5125 has remained unchanged. The department staffs four engines, two ladders, one light rescue, and one shift deputy chief. The department also cross-staffs a heavy rescue that is utilized for special emergencies involving MBTA vehicles and trains. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of a variety of apparatus including E-One, Pirsch, Ranger, and Seagrave. Today the department operates with mostly E-One equipment. The color scheme of white/red remains unchanged. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 4's 1988 Ranger and Ladder 2's 1992 Seagrave. The pumper was reassigned as reserve Engine 5 and the ladder has been reassigned to Ladder 1. Braintree responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Fallon Ambulance providing transport services.
