DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Burlington is located twelve miles north of Boston, has a population of over 24,000 people, and an area of 11.88 square miles. The town has a good deal of commercial office buildings in addition to the large two-story Burlington Mall. Additional strip malls and restaurants also are spread throught Burlington with the day time population swelling to 150,000. Since 1993- 4 new multi-story hotels have been built, over one thousand housing units have been built including 2(two) 10 story apartment towers on the Woburn line and several wood truss condo complexes, and 2 assisted living facilities. On the commercial side many new 4-5 story office building have been erected. The ever expanding Burlington Mall now has over 170 stores, and several new shopping areas have opened (ie Wayside Commons) as well as new restaurants. Route 128/I-95 and U.S. Route 3 both have access points in the town. Lahey Clinic provides in-town emergency department services and has just completed a major expansion/new wing.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Burlington Fire Department responds from two stations staffing two engines, one tower-ladder, and one ambulance. The crew of the tower will cross staff a second ambulance when needed and the crew of the first out ambulance will also cross staff a third engine when the situation calls for it. Fire Alarm is operated by Fire Alarm Operators out of the Headquarters station and the frequency of 483.3625 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of a variety of manufacturers including Pierce, E-One, and Hendrickson. Today the department operates with mostly all Pierce and one E-One pumper, which is scheduled to be replaced this summer. The color scheme has remained all red. Still on the roster from 1993 are Engine 1's 1990 Pierce and the Haz/Mat's 1988 Chevy/Hackney. Engine 1 is currently in reserve status as Engine 4 and the Haz/Mat Unit is now designated Rescue 1. This vehicle is not staffed, but carries an air cascase system and is available to other communities via a mutual aid response when needed. Burlington responds to medical emergencies with a BLS ambulance and ALS services are provided by Armstrong Ambulance Service.
