DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Chelsea is located two miles north of Boston, has a population of over 38,000 people, and an area of 1.98 square miles. The city is a densly packed residencial community with various forms of industry throughout. There are also many stores and other commercial businesses throughout the city. Other than Route 1, there are no major highways that intersect the city. Chelsea is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and has a number of bus lines in addition to the commuter rail train service. Chelsea does not have an emergency department within the city limites, but patients may opt to be transported to a Boston hospital or Whidden in neighboring Everett.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Chelsea Fire Department underweant a number of years of hard financial difficulty, but has been rebuilt in more recent years. Apparatus responds from three stations with fire alarm being opearated in a building across the street from Headquarters. The frequency of 154.325 has remained unchanged. The department staffs three engines, two ladders, and one shift deputy chief. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Pierce which has remained the apparatus manufacturer of choice. The color scheme of white/red was not changed. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 2's 1988 Pierce and Ladder 3's 1983 Pierce. The pumper was refurbished by EJ Murphy and is now in reserve status as Engine 4. The ladder is also in reserve status and is designated Ladder 3. Chelsea responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Cataldo Ambulance providing transport services.
