EVERETT

DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Everett is located two miles north of Boston, has a population of over 36,000 people, and an area of 3.75 square miles. Along with areas of dense residential population, the city also has a heavy industry base. Including chemical and electrical plants, the city has a wide variety of hidden hazards that challenge today's firefighters. The downtown area makes up a large square that runs along Broadway that includes many stores and places to eat. There are no major highways that intersect the city, but I-93 and Route 1 can be picked up from nearby cities. The city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and has a number of bus routes that service the community. The Whidden Hospital provides emergency department services to Everett and surrounding communities.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Everett Fire Department has seen an upgrade in its equipment over the last fifteen years. Apparatus responds from three stations, with headquarters containing the fire alarm office. The frequency of 154.310 has remained unchanged. The department staffs three engines, two ladders, and one shift deputy chief. The department also has placed into service a heavy rescue that is cross-staffed by Engine 2. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Pierce. Today the department still operates with mostly Pierce equipment. The color scheme all red apparatus has not changed. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is all three front line pumpers. Engine 1's 1989 Pierce is still in service with Engine 3. Engine 2 and 3's 1985 Pierces are in reserve status. Everett responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Cataldo Ambulance providing transport services.
