DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Lynn is located eleven miles north of Boston, has a population of over 81,000 people, and an area of 11.21 square miles. The city has a dense population and a large industrial base. Included in these is a division of General Electric and the West Lynn Creamery. Wayne Alarm, which has installed and serviced fire and security alarm systems for decades, also makes its home here. U.S. Route 1 can be accessed through the city and Route 128/I95 is not far away. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's commuter rail has several stops in Lynn. The Lynn-Union Hosptial provides emergency department services to residents and local patients.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Lynn Fire Department responds from seven stations staffing six engines, three ladders, ALS ambulance service, an on duty safety chief, and an on duty deputy chief. Fire Alarm is still operated by civilian fire alarm operators at the Wayne Alarm building on Essex Street and the frequency of 154.415 has remained unchanged. Unfortunately, the department has been hit hard in recent years by budget cuts with several pieces of apparatus being permanently taken out of service. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly American LaFrance and E-One. E-One has continued to be the manufacturer of choice. The color scheme has not changed from white/red. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 are the three 1988 E-One pumpers and 1988 E-One ladder. They are all spares. Lynn responds to medical emergencies with ALS ambulances with Atlantic Ambulance (Cataldo) providing the BLS ambulance service.
