MALDEN

DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Malden is located five miles north of Boston, has a population of over 54,000 people, and an area of 5.13 square miles. The city is very diverse with a mix of homes, apartment buildings, commerical and industrial businesses. The downtown area makes up a large square with many stores, banks, and places to eat. Other than Route 1, there are no major highways that intersect the city, but I-93 can be picked up in nearby Medford or Stoneham. The city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and has a number of bus lines in addition to the commuter rail and orange line subway service. Malden Hospital once served the local residents, but has since been downgraded to a day facility only due to financial shortcomings.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Malden Fire Department has signigicantly upgraded it's equipment over the last fifteen years. Apparatus responds from three stations, with a fourth being built. This station, which will be located on the Revere line, is unique in that it will be occupied by an engine company from both Malden and Revere. This is the first dual occupancy station in the Metro-Boston area. Fire Alarm is still operated by firefighters at the headquarters station and the frequency of 154.250 has remained unchanged. The department staffs four engines, two ladders, one heavy rescue, and one shift deputy chief. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Mack. Today the department operates with mostly Pierce equipment. The color scheme has changed from white/red to black/red. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 4's 1989 Mack CF/KME. The pumper was refurbished by EJ Murphy and is scheduled to be replaced soon. Malden responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Cataldo Ambulance providing transport services.
