DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Medford is located five miles north of Boston, has a population of over 57,000 people, and an area of 8.76 square miles. The city is mostly residential with some industry and commercial business. There are a number of stores in the downtown area and other spots, including an indoor mall, and the Mystic River runs through the city. The downtown area makes up a large square with many stores, banks, and places to eat. Interstate 93 has several on/offramps in Medford and the city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Several bus lines, the orange line of the subway, and the commuter rail are available to take passengers to their desinations. The Lawrence Memorial Hospital provides emergency department services to residents and local patients.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Medford Fire Department has seen a significant upgrade to it's equipment over the last fifteen years. Apparatus responds from six stations with fire alarm still being opearted out of the headquarters station. The frequency of 153.890 has remained unchanged. The department staffs five engines, two ladders, and one shift deputy chief. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Mack, Pierce, and E-One. Today the department operates with a combination of E-One and Pierce equipment. The color scheme pf white/red has not changed. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 2's 1987 Pierce, Engine 4's 1992 E-One, and both of the 1992 E-One ladder trucks. Engine 2's Pierce was reassigned to Engine 3, which is sometimes in service if manpower is available. Engine 4's E-One was reassigned to Engine 6 and is still in front line service. Ladder 1's 1992 E-One is in reserve status, while Ladder 2's unit is still in front line service. Medford responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Armstrong Ambulance providing transport services.
