WATERTOWN

DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Watertown borders the city of Boston, has a population of over 33,000 people, and an area of 4.6 square miles. Watertown has a large number of shopping plazas including the Arsenal Mall, which sits on the site of a former U.S. Army weapons facility. The downtown area makes up a shopping center with many stores and places to eat. There are no major highways that intersect the community, but I-95 can be picked up nearby. Watertown is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and has a number of bus lines in addition to the green line trolley service. There are no emergency departments within the borders, but patients may opt to be transported to Boston or one of the other local hospitals, such as Newton-Wellesley.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Watertown Fire Department responds from three stations staffing three engines, two ladders, a BLS ambulance, and an on duty deputy chief. Fire Alarm is still operated by civilian dispatchers at the police station and the frequency of 483.7125 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Maxim and E-One. Today the department operates with all E-One equipment. The color scheme has changed from all red to white/red. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 1's 1988 E-One, which is now reserve Engine 4. Watertown responds to medical emergencies with a BLS ambulance while Armstrong Ambulance Service provides ALS units.
