2015 MASSACHUSETTS NEWS

Acton, Mass Fire Department- staffing levels have returned to normal levels after budget constraints forced a reduction in the later part of the fiscal year.

Acton, Mass Fire Department- has placed into service a 2015 Chevy Tahoe as Car 1 (fire chief). The 2008 Ford Expedition previously assigned to the chief has been reassigned as Car 4.

Adams, Mass Ambulance- has placed into service a 2008 Chevrolet C4500/PL Custom ambulance as Unit 1. The ambulance previously served with North Adams Ambulance.

Amesbury, Mass Fire Department- has named Exeter, NH Assistant Chief Ken Berkenbush as the new fire chief once Fire Chief Jonathan Brickett retires in July after 35 years of service.

Amesbury, Mass Fire Department- Captain Jim Nolan has been promoted to Deputy Chief.

Andover, Mass Fire Department- plans to expand/renovate the Ballardvale fire station have been put on hold indefinitely. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Arlington, Mass Fire Department- renovations have been completed at the Fire Headquarters Station.

Ashland, Mass Fire Department- Scott Boothby has been appointed as the new fire chief.

Belmont, Mass Fire Department- has placed into service a 2015 Ford Expedition 4X4 as Car 3 and a 2015 Ford F-150 as Car 5.

Berlin, Mass Fire Department- voters will decide on December 11 if the Fire and EMS departments should be combined into on department.

Billerica, Mass Fire Department- with the delivery of the new Engine 1, some apparatus reassigments are taking place. The 2012 E-One Typhoon previously assigned to Engine 1 will be reassigned to Engine 4. Engine 4's 1996 E-One will be reassigned as Spare Engine 7, replacing a 1986 E-One which will be disposed of.

Boston, Mass Fire Department- The Fire Brigade (E54) on Long Island has been shut down as of January 1st due to the damaged bridge. The crews have been reassigned throughout the city. It is not known at this time if the station will reopen when repairs are complete, although the department will have at least a detail crew on the island when summer camps and activities are taking place.

Boston Fire Department- is in the process of placing into service 2015 Ford Expedition 4X4s for the Division 1 Deputy (C-6), Division 2 Deputy (C-7) and the Safety Chief (H-1).

Boston Fire Department- Firefighter Joe Hughes of Rescue 1 will retire from the department after 41+ years of service.

Boston, Mass Fire Department- has taken delivery of a 2015 Ford F-550/EVI 4x4 for the Motor Squad.

Boston Fire Department- had put out for bid for a 32' Tunnel Hull Catamaran Landing Craft. The bid was won by Armstrong Marine out of Washington State who will build it at their new Swansboro NC plant. It will be similar to the Salem Harbormasters catamaran, but have a larger firepump and wider bow door for landing firefighters and equipment on the Boston Harbor Islands, in particular the outer islands that have no pier access. Delivery is tentatively set for the fall.

Boston Fire Department- Firefighter Bill Murphy of Tower 10 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

Boston, Mass Fire Department- has put out for bid the demolition and construction of a new firehouse at the location of Engine 42/Rescue 2. The new building will be built at the same site as the old one.

Boston, Mass Fire Department- has accepted a 12 million dollar grant that will cover the costs of hiring 75 new firefighters over the next 2 years. The grand was part of the Federal SAFER program.

Bourne, Mass Fire Department- has named Norman Sylvester Jr. as the new fire chief.

Boxford, Mass Fire Department- has named Brian Geiger to be the new Fire Chief. He will begin his duties on June 1st.

Brewster, Mass Fire Department- voters approved funds to building a new Headquarters Fire Station.

Bridgewater, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant for SCBA cylinders and packs.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- has appointed Deputy Chief Michael Williams as the new Fire Chief.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- Squad A was involved in an MVA and is out of service while the extent of the damage is assesed. Fortunately, there were no serious injuires but the 2003 HME/Central States suffered severe damage.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- has sold off Tower 1's 1994 FWD/Baker 95’ Aerialscope, Tower 2's 1986 Mack CF/1987 Baker 95’ Aerialscope and Engine 6's 1987 Mack CF686/KME 1000/500. Smeal is also reported as sending the city a loaner 75' to use until the new ladder is delivered.

Brookline, Mass Fire Department- the department has placed into service a 2015 Ford F-250 with plow as M-2.

Brookline, Mass Fire Department- Tower 1's 2007 E-One/Bronto Skylift 2000/300/100' has been sold to Victoria, BC Fire Department in Canada.

Brookline, Mass Fire Department- has placed into service a 2016 Ford Expedition 4X4 as Car 2.

Fall River, Mass Emergency Management- has placed into service a 1996 Chevrolet Kodiak/KME Non-Walk Through rehab unit. The rig had previously served as Paxton, MA Rescue 1 and has been desginated as the Special Services Unit.

Fall River, Mass Fire Department- has reversed its decision to take Engine 5 out of service for a month while the floor to the Globe Fire Station is repaired after a fire in that section of the city. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Fall River, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal SAFER grant and will hire 10 firefighters. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Falmouth hires new firefighter. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Falmouth, Mass Fire Department- two pumpers were removed from service for failing state inspections and excessive rust. This leaves only four pumpers for five stations. Some options being considered are leasing or renting a replacement or purchasing a demo engine. Currently a new pumper is on order, however delivery isn't expected until the summer. Even after delivery, that would leave the department without a spare.

Falmouth, Mass Fire Department- has purchased a 1992 Sutphen pumper from Southold, New York for the West Falmouth station. The department recenly has to remove several engines from service permanently.

Fitchburg, Mass Fire Department- with the new Engine 4 in service, some reassignments have taken place. Former Engine 4's 1997 Pierce Saber 1500/750 has been reassigned to Engine 1. Somerville, Mass Fire Department- due to conditions at Station 3's living quarters, Engine 3 has been relocated to Headquarters until further notice. The mobile trailer that has been used for living quarters was erected over 15 years ago and was supposed to be a temporary solution to the flooding that would take place within the fire station located at the rear of Police Headquarters. No solution was ever enacted upon and the trailer is now no longer habitable.

Somerville, Mass Fire Department- As of May 16, 2015 Chief Engineer Kevin Kelleher is retiring from the department. He has been a member of the department for 37 1/2 years, and Chief Engineer for 18 1/2 years.
