2016 MASSACHUSETTS NEWS

Abington, Mass Fire Department- recently acquired a 1985 Dodge 4X4 w/ 100/275 skid unit. It has been designated Squad 1.

Acton, Mass Fire Department- Ladder 28's 2010 Pierce was damaged when the vehicle caught fire inside the fire station. No injuries occured and the fire is under investigation. The ladder truck is out of service until further notice.

Acton, Mass Fire Department- Fire Chief Patrick Futterer has announced he will retire on March 4th.

Acton, Mass Fire Department- Engine 23's 2001 HME/Ferrara 1500/750 was struck by an SUV that ran a stop sign. Fortunately there were no serious injuries reported. The rig sustained heavy damage and will be out of service for an extended period of time. Already down a ladder truck, the department is borowing a spare truck from Concord.

Amherst, Mass Fire Department- Assistant Fire Chief Donald McKay has retired after 40 years of service.

Ashburnham, Mass Fire Department- Fire Chief Paul Rekos Sr has resigned from the department to persue another opportunity out of the department.

Ashburnham, Mass Fire Department- has named retired Chelmsford Fire Chief John Parow as Interim Fire Chief.

Ashby, Mass Fire Department- Assistant Fire Chief Mike Bussell has been named as the new Fire Chief.

Ashland, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant in the amount of $ 41,143 for 50 Breathing Apparatus cylinders.

Attleboro, Mass Fire Department- has placed into service a 2016 Ford F-450 4x4 as Car 7 (support unit).

Auburn, Mass Fire Department- the 2007 Chevrolet/Life Line ambulance that had been assigned to Ambulance 3 has been converted into a dive rescue unit.

Ayer, Mass Fire Department- the former fire station and the land it is on has been sold to a private business.

Barre, Mass Fire Department- has named Lieutenant Robert Rogowski as the new Fire Chief.

Barre, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant in the amount of $229,429.00 for 32 Firefighter Breathing Apparatus.

The Barre, Mass Fire association would like to recognize Barre Assistant Fire chief Gary Rogowski for his 33 years of service to the Town Of Barre and wishes him well on his retirement, which will take effect on November 4th.

Berlin, Mass Fire Department- is leasing a 1989 E-One Hurricane 1500/300 95’ RM Tower. The unit had previously served in Flanders, CT as Tower 25 (number retained in Berlin) and is being leased for 1 year to allow the department time to research and purchase a newer ladder truck.

Berlin, Mass Fire Department- Interim Fire and EMS Chief Paul Zbikowski has been made the permanent Chief.

Berlin, Mass- Berlin Rescue and the Fire Department have merged into one department.

Beverly, Mass Fire Department- the fire chief has received a new 2016 Chevy Tahoe.

Billerica, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant in the amount of $22,319 for 2 Turnout Gear Washer / Dryers.

Boston Fire Department- Marine 2's new Armstrong Marine 32 x 12 Catamaran Landing Craft has been completed at the factory and has finished trials. The unit is equipped with a 500 GPM pump and 40 gallon AR-AFFF Foam tank.

Boston Fire Department- my academy classmate Neal Mullane Jr has been promoted to District Chief. Congratulations to Neal on this well deserved promotion.

Boston, Mass Fire Department- has christened their new fireboat and named it after Father Dan Mahoney, the long time fire chaplin. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Boston Fire Department- The 2015 Ford F-550/EVI 4X4 Utility originally assigned to the motor squad has been reassigned to W12 (Air Supply Unit).

Boston, Mass Fire Department- Firefighter Ed Kelly has been elected as the national Secretary/Treasurer of the IAFF. He had previously held the position of President of the PFFM.

Braintree, Mass Fire Department- has made the following promotions: Captain Bill Sawtelle has been promoted to deputy chief, Lieutenant Tim Starkey has been promoted to captain, and Firefighter Richard Brown has been promoted to lieutenant.

Braintree, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant in the amount of $19,466 for 2 - Turnout Gear Washer / Dryers and RIT Equipment.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- insurance has approved the repairs needed to Squad A. The rig was damaged in a collision and has been out of service for several months.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- Squad A's 2003 HME/Central States has returned to service after being sidelined with accident damage. After a delay for insurance adjustment, the rig has been fully repaired.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- the Smeal 75' loaner ladder truck is in the city and is expected to be placed into service soon. The unit is on loan to the department while the new 105' aerial ladder truck is being built.

Brockton, Mass Fire Department- some information about the loaner ladder truck- The agreement is loan with an option to buy if the department so chooses. The truck is a 1995 Spartan/Smeal 75’ RMA and had served as Denver, CO Ladder 23. The unit has a 1250 GPM pump, which current is not funtional, and a 275 gallon water tank. This truck will be run out of Station 4 and is lettered as Ladder 4.

Brookline, Mass Fire Department- Engine 1's 2006 E-One Cyclone II 1500/500 has been sent to Greenwood to be refurbished.

Burlington, Mass Fire Department- has received a Federal grant in the amount of $578,112 to Hire 4 - New Firefighters.

After 100 years of service, Ladder 5 was disbanded and their 1996 Pierce Lance 105' RMA was placed into reserve status.
After being disbanded in 2011, Ladder 9 was officially reorganized at the Carew Street firehouse being staffed by one officer and two fire fighters per tour and using their previously assigned 2000 Pierce Quantum 105' RMA.
Engine 5, now the lone company left at Station 5 on Odessa Street has taken possession of their 2015 Pierce Velocity 75' quint and the company is now staffed with one officer and three fire fighters per tour.
