2023 WITHIN NEW ENGLAND DEATH NOTICES

Courtesy of the Rye, NH Fire Department: It is with deep regret that the members of Rye Fire Rescue announce the passing of Lt. Charles Gallant. Chuck was a 20-year veteran of the Rye Fire Rescue. He passed away on December 14, 2023 at home after working an overtime shift. Chuck dedicated his career to helping others throughout the New Hampshire Seacoast, not only by responding to emergencies in Rye but also volunteering countless hours with the Rye Toy Bank, MDA, serving as the Local 4411 Union President, and so much more.
In 2014 he was awarded the Paul W. Sypek Medal of Valor, which is given to a first responder for conspicuous bravery at extreme risk of life, for assisting in the rescue of a brother firefighter at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
We extend our deepest condolences to Lt. Gallant’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We share in the grief of losing an exceptional individual and express our gratitude for his years of service and sacrifice. CLICK FOR ARTICLE

From the Simsbury, CT Fire Department: The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company regrets to announce the passing of Technical Member Joe Barrett. Joe was a longtime firefighter assigned to Tariffville Station until he took on a new role as a Technical Member within the SVFC. Known to many as "Rockin' Reverand Joe", he was a driving force behind the operation of Simsbury's hometown radio station, WSIM 103.5FM. Please keep Joe's family and friends in your thoughts.

From Barnstead NH Fire Dept: The Barnstead Fire Department regrets to announce the passing of (Retired) Deputy Fire Chief Rodney T. Boyd. Deputy Chief Rodney Boyd started his fire service career on November 11, 1956 with the Center Barnstead Fire Department until his retirement on November 30, 2015, serving 59 years of continuous and dedicated service to the Town of Barnstead. Over all those years of service, Deputy Chief Boyd was not only active as a firefighter and an officer But during his tenure as Fire Chief of the Center Barnstead Fire Department; he contributed to the merger of the Center Barnstead Fire Company and Barnstead Parade Fire Company and was instrumental in guiding the Center Barnstead Fire Department and Ambulance squad. His career with the fire service in the Town of Barnstead is truly remarkable and will be truly missed. Deputy Chief Boyd was well known in the NH fire service. Deputy Chief Boyd was also an Instructor for Fire Service, he taught many classes throughout the area. Deputy Boyd also worked as a Lineman and a Supervisor for NH-COOP for many years until he retired.

Retired Gloucester, MA Firefighter Richard “Rocky” Morris passed away on September 16th at the age of 72. Rocky was a 35 year veteran of the Gloucester Fire Department and their first EMS Coordinator.

Retired Tiverton, RI Firefighter Joseph Perry passed away on September 16th at the age of 73. He also served as a town coucilor. CLICK FOR ARTICLE

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Pembroke, NH Lieutenant Terrence M. Judge, 64.
On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, Lieutenant Terrence “Terry” M. Judge responded to a flooding incident inside a multi-family residence. While at the scene, he operated a pump suction hose in the basement of the structure. He returned from the incident and was found the following morning collapsed in his home from a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). He was immediately transported to the hospital where he passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023.

Couresty of Echo Hose Co in Connecticut: The Officers of the Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. 1 regret to announce the passing of Veteran member James "Buzzy" Schilkowski. Buzzy joined the Echo Hose in the 1970s as an Auxiliary member where he served as Captain of the Shelton Emergency Department. He then served the City of Shelton and the Echo Hose until 1985.

Danvers, MA retired Lieutenant James A. McInnis has passed away. Per the Danvers Fire Department, Lieutenant McInnis joined the department as a call firefighter on February 15, 1954. He was appointed as a permanent firefighter on May 1, 1955. On January 19, 1969, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. In 1992, he served as Acting Captain on Group 2. He retired from the department on December 31, 1994, after 40 years of service to the Town of Danvers.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, Firefighter Robert “Bob” Thomas Gardner, Jr., was at the fire station putting apparatus and equipment back in service, following a residential structure fire call. The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Henderson County (Lexington, TN) Firefighter/Driver Richard “Rick” D. Miller, age 69.
On Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, Firefighter/Driver Richard “Rick” D. Miller responded to an alarm activation at a county school. Shortly after arriving home, he suffered a medical emergency. He was found unresponsive by his family. CPR was immediately performed, and he was transported to the hospital but could not be revived. He was pronounced deceased a short time later from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Chief Ralph Michael Stegbauer, Concord Green Township Fire Department (Washington Court House, Ohio), age 71.
On Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, Chief Ralph Michael Stegbauer and Captain Jeffery Skaggs were utilizing a mechanical lift to make repairs to the radio tower when the lift tipped over. Both were ejected from the tower basket from several feet in the air. Chief Stegbauer and Captain Skaggs were pronounced deceased at the scene from the injuries they sustained in the fall.

On Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, Safety Officer Daniel Potts was at the fire station. He was getting in his support vehicle to respond to a residential fire when he was found unconscious. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Lubbock, TX Firefighter Matthew Dawson, 34.
On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, Firefighter Matthew Dawson and the members of the Lubbock Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on an interstate highway. While they were on the scene of the crash in the northbound lanes, a southbound vehicle lost control, crossed the median, and struck Firefighter Dawson. He was immediately transported to the hospital where it was determined that he suffered a traumatic brain injury. After 3 years of long-term health challenges, he passed away on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023. Lieutenant David Eric Hill from Lubbock Fire Rescue and a police officer also passed away on Jan. 11, 2020, from injuries they sustained in the accident.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Kinnelon, NJ Volunteer Lieutenant Justin Bower, 30.
On Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, Lieutenant Justin Bower responded to a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence. After returning home, approximately 2 hours later, his wife found him unconscious and immediately called 9-1-1. Emergency personnel attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. He passed away at his home from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Forest Bend Fire Department (Webster, TX) Chief John Norris, 55.
On Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, Chief John Norris responded to a structure fire at an abandoned house that was scheduled for demolition within the next few weeks. Shortly after returning home, he suffered a heart attack. 9-1-1 was immediately called and he was transported to the HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake Hospital where he died a short time later. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Ballardsville Fire and Rescue (Crestwood, KY) Fire Sergeant Thomas Petschke, Jr., 53.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, Fire Sergeant Thomas Petschke, Jr. was at the scene of a residential fire that had expanded into the woods. While battling the brush fire, he collapsed from an apparent heart attack. He was immediately treated and transported to the local hospital where he later passed away.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Capon Valley (Wardensville, WV) Volunteer Firefighter Ronald "Ron" Maurice Strosnider, 75.
On Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, Firefighter Ronald “Ron” Maurice Strosnider responded to a medical emergency at a residence. While on scene, he became ill and was taken home by fire department personnel. Later in the day 9-1-1 was called to his house. While being transported to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest and passed away.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Chicago, IL Firefighter/EMT Andrew "Drew" B. Price, 39.
On Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, firefighters responded to a fire in a four-story building. The building houses the Lincoln Station Bar and Restaurant on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. Firefighter/EMT Andrew “Drew” B. Price was on the roof opening up holes for ventilation when he fell through a skylight shaft. A mayday was called and Firefighter Price was immediately located; however, they needed to breach a wall to reach him. After being rescued, he was immediately rushed to the Illinois Masonic Hospital where he later died from the injuries he sustained in the fall.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Prairieton Fire (Terre Haute, IN) District Chief David Phelps, 74.
On Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, District Chief David Phelps was at the scene of a residential fire, where he was found deceased inside a fire apparatus from an apparent heart attack.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Whitesburg, KY Assistant Chief Joseph Back, age 59.
On Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, Assistant Chief Joseph Back responded to the scene of a medical emergency at a residence. While at the scene, he suffered a massive heart attack. He was immediately transported to the local hospital where he remained in a coma until his passing on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Coon Creek (Wooten, KY) Firefighter Regina Huffman, age 39.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, firefighters responded to an ATV accident with two people seriously injured. Helicopters were summoned for transport. As the apparatus Firefighter Huffman was riding in left the scene to go to the landing zone, it slipped off the roadway, went down an embankment, and struck a house. Firefighter Huffman and two other firefighters, one of which was her oldest son, were injured in the crash. All three were immediately rushed to the hospital where Firefighter Huffman died from her injuries a short time later. The two other firefighters had minor injuries and were released from the hospital.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Ionia, IA Captain Anthony Hoffman, age 43.
On Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023, Ionia Fire Department firefighters were responding to a cornfield fire. A pumper was driven by a member of the department and a converted Polaris Ranger fire vehicle was driven by Captain Anthony “Tony” Hoffman. Captain Hoffman reared off and hit the side of the pumper, causing him to lose control and crash. He was ejected from the vehicle. He was immediately airlifted to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he passed away a short time later. The other firefighter driving the pumper was not hurt.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Hurburt Field, FL Captain Adam Wayne Hart, age 38.
On Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, during his 48-hour shift, Captain Adam Wayne Hart was found unresponsive on the floor inside his bunkroom. CPR was immediately performed by fire department and medical personnel, to no avail. Approximately one hour later, he was declared deceased. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: West Whiteland Fire Co (Exton, PA) Firefighter Colin Reedy, Age 25.
On Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, during a heavy downpour, Firefighter Colin Reedy and Firefighter Emily Gindele were responding to the station in Firefighter Reedy’s privately owned vehicle in response to an alarm. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Firefighter Reedy was pronounced deceased at the scene. Firefighter Gindele was transported to the Paoli Memorial Trauma Center where she is listed in critical but stable condition.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Baltimore, MD Lieutenant Dillon J. Rinaldo, age 26
On Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, Baltimore City Fire Department firefighters responded to a fire that broke out in a block of brick two-story homes. While inside one of the homes, 5 firefighters became overwhelmed by the smoke and heat. All 5 firefighters were rushed to the hospital. On Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, Lieutenant Dillon J. Rinaldo died as a result of the injuries he sustained. This is the second firefighter that has succumbed to his injuries from this fire. On the evening of Oct. 19, 2023, EMT/Firefighter Rodney Pitts, III also passed away. The other 3 firefighters have been treated and released. Investigation into the incident continues.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Baltimore, MD Firefighter Rodney Pitts, III, age 31
On Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, Baltimore City Fire Department firefighters responded to a fire that broke out in a block of brick two-story homes. While inside one of the homes, 5 firefighters became overwhelmed by the smoke and heat. All 5 firefighters were rushed to the hospital. EMT/Firefighter Rodney Pitts, III died as a result of the injuries he sustained. One of the firefighters remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. The other 3 firefighters have been treated and released. Investigation into the incident continues.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Abingdon, VA Firefighter Cameron Craig, age 20.
On Oct. 19, 2023, Firefighter Cameron Craig was responding to a fire alarm call as a passenger in a fire department truck when the truck was involved in a crash. Firefighter Craig was fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department - Warren, PA Fire Chief Timothy “TJ” M. Johnson, age 56.
On Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, Chief Timothy “TJ” M. Johnson responded to an EMS call at a residence. Upon returning to the station approximately an hour later, he complained of indigestion and an upset stomach. Chief Johnson went home and less than 10 minutes later, 9-1-1 was called to his residence. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 17, 2023, from an apparent heart attack.

Richmond, VT Battalion Chief Earl Dyer, age 65.
On Oct. 5, 2023, Battalion Chief Earl Dyer suffered a medical emergency while working his shift. Battalion Chief Dyer was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a brief time later.

Seven Springs, NC Volunteer Firefighter Troy Thompson, age 46.
On Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, Firefighter Troy Thompson was at the scene of a vehicle accident when he suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately rushed to UNC Health Wayne where he passed away a short time later. Investigation into the incident continues.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Cavour, SD Volunteer Fire Chief Josh Kogel, 48.
On Monday, Sept, 4, 2023, Chief Josh Kogel responded to a structure fire at the Hurd Alignment and Services building. While outside the burning building at the fire apparatus, he experienced a medical emergency and collapsed. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Diboll, TX Volunteer Firefighter Joe Parish, 67.
On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, Firefighter Joe Parish was responding to a request for mutual aid from Fuller Springs, TX, when his privately owned vehicle left the roadway and crashed. Firefighter Parish was air-lifted to a Tyler, TX hospital for emergency surgery. On Friday, September 1, 2023, he passed away from the injuries he sustained in the accident.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Louisa County, VA Firefighter Mia Regina Ethridge, 20.
On Sunday, July 9, 2023, Firefighter Mia Regina Ethridge was responding to a residential structure fire when the fire apparatus she was driving ran off the road in the rain and hit a tree. She was ejected from the vehicle. Firefighter Ethridge was receiving treatment at the University of Virginia Medical Center when she succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the accident on Saturday, September 2, 2023. Firefighter Ethridge was wearing her seatbelt. Firefighter Ethridge was also a firefighter with the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department.

The US Fire Administration is announcing the following Line of Duty Death: Chicago, IL Lieutenant Kevin P. Ward, 58.
On Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, Lieutenant Kevin P. Ward responded to a fire at a single-family residence. While fighting the fire in the basement, he was critically injured, and a mayday was transmitted. He was transported to the Resurrection Hospital and subsequently transferred to Loyola Medical Center. On Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, he succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the fire. Three other firefighters were wounded in the incident, and all have been released from the hospital.

The US Fire Administration is announcing the following Line of Duty Death: Broward Sheriff’s Office, FL Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson, 50.
On Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services flight crew members were dispatched to a medical call regarding a traffic crash with injuries in North Lauderdale. The EC 135 Eurocopter was airborne when the pilot attempted to return to the Pompano Beach Airpark. The aircraft sustained an in-flight emergency and crashed into a small apartment building, east of North Dixie Highway and just south of Northeast 10th Street. Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson died in the crash. An individual that was inside the apartment at the time of the crash was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other crew members and two civilians were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are all listed in fair condition.

The US Fire Administration is announcing the following Line of Duty Death: Fuller Hose Company No 1 (North East, PA) Fire Police Officer Shawn Giles, age 53.
On Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023, Fire Police Officer Shawn Giles was assisting the Pennsylvania State Police, who were investigating a two-vehicle crash, by directing traffic in the eastbound lanes of Route 20 in North East, Pennsylvania. During the assist, a vehicle drove into the crash scene and struck Fire Police Officer Giles. The impact sent him airborne approximately 15 to 20 feet before he hit the pavement. Fire Police Officer Giles was transported to UPMC Hamot Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 1:43 p.m. The driver of the vehicle that hit Fire Police Officer Giles is reportedly facing multiple felony charges.

The US Fire Administration is announcing the following Line of Duty Death: West Milford, NJ Fire Chief Edward "Eddie" J. Steines, age 64
On Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at 2:32 p.m., Chief Edward “Eddie” J. Steines responded to a train fire in Hardyston Township. All units cleared the scene at 4:58 p.m. and Chief Edward Steines returned home. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Chief Edward Steines collapsed at his home from an apparent heart attack. He was transported to Chilton Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 7:30 a.m.

The US Fire Administration has announced three California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection line of duty deaths resulting from a helicopter crash in Sacramento, CA.
On Sunday, August 6, 2023, two firefighting helicopters, a Sikorsky S-64E and a Bell 407, collided in Cabazon, California, while battling the Broadway Wildland Fire, a vegetation fire sparked by a nearby structure fire. While the Sikorsky S-64E helicopter was able to land safely, the Bell 407 crashed. All three occupants of this helicopter, Assistant Chief Josh Bischof, Captain Timothy “Tim” Rodriguez, and Contract Pilot Tony Sousa were killed. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Honey Grove, TX Volunteer Firefighter Evan Curtis Brown, 18
On Sunday, July 9, 2023, Firefighter Evan Curtis Brown and another firefighter were responding to a motor vehicle crash in Firefighter Brown’s personal vehicle, when they hit a cow in the road. The vehicle rolled, ejecting Firefighter Brown and causing severe injuries. Firefighter Brown was rushed to the hospital where he remained in the intensive care unit at the Medical City Hospital in Plano, Texas until his passing on Sunday, July 30, 2023. The other firefighter suffered less serious injuries.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Birmingham, AL Firefighter Jordan Melton, age 28.
On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Station 9 in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham, Firefighter Jordan Melton and Firefighter Jamal Jones were near the bay doors when they were shot by an assailant in the chest and legs. On Monday, July 17, 2023, Firefighter Jordan Melton succumbed to his injuries. Firefighter Jamal Jones remains in stable condition. Police are searching for suspects, and this is an ongoing investigation.

The US Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Memphis, TN Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman, age 51.
On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, members of the Memphis Fire Department responded to a residential fire. While fighting the fire, 4 firefighters became trapped. The firefighters were rescued and immediately transported to the hospital. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 19, 2023, Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman passed away from the injuries he sustained in the fire. The other 3 firefighters remain in the hospital.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, members of the Memphis Fire Department responded to a residential fire. While fighting the fire, 4 firefighters became trapped. The firefighters were rescued and immediately transported to the hospital. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 19, 2023, Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman passed away from the injuries he sustained in the fire. The other 3 firefighters remain in the hospital.

The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty Death: Bramwell, WV Volunteer Firefighter James “Spot” Cleary, Jr., 19.
On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, father and son, Firefighter James Cleary, Sr. and Firefighter James “Spot” Cleary, Jr., were out on the department owned ATV examining previous accident scenes. While they were out of the vehicle, on foot, the ATV began to roll towards them. They attempted to stop it but it dragged them over a hill and then rolled multiple times. Both firefighters were transported to local hospitals. Firefighter James “Spot” Cleary, Jr. passed away from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Firefighter James Cleary, Sr., has been discharged from the hospital.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Frederick County, VA Firefighter Recruit Ian T. Strickler, age 35.
Firefighter Recruit Ian T. Strickler was part of the Frederick County, VA Fire & Rescue Recruit Class #14 that started on Monday, July 3, 2023. On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, while attending physical fitness training, he suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately transported to the Winchester Medical Center where he passed away. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The US Fire Administration is announcing the following Line of Duty Death Notification: Noble Township, OH Assistant Chief Jarod F. Kammeyer, 48.
On Sunday, November 1, 2020, Assistant Chief Jarod F. Kammeyer reported to the fire station as stand-by while units responded on automatic mutual aid to a structure fire. While at the station, he contracted COVID-19. On Monday, November 16, 2020, he was admitted to the hospital with severe COVID-19 symptoms. After being hospitalized for 288 days, he returned home. Assistant Chief Kammeyer was hospitalized again in the fall of 2022. On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, he passed away from multiple organ failure related to COVID-19.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Firefighter Brice C. Trossbach, 25, of the Naval District Washington Fire Department-NAS Patuxent River Patuxent River, MD.
On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, firefighters from the Naval Air Station Patuxent River responded to a mutual aid call at a residential fire located on Deer Wood Park Drive in Leonardtown, MD. Firefighter Brice C. Trossbach, while fighting the fire on the first floor, fell into the basement. He was rescued and immediately rushed to the hospital where he passed away from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Firefighter Trossbach was also a volunteer firefighter with the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department and the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Chief Hal Matthew Hanenkrath, 40, of the South Richland Fire Department in Defiance, Ohio.
On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Chief Hal Matthew Hanenkrath was at the scene of a residential fire when he started experiencing shortness of breath and chest pains. He was immediately treated at the scene and was then rushed to the local hospital where he passed away a short time later from a pulmonary embolism.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger, 84, New Haven-Berger Fire Protection District in New Haven, Missouri.
On Sunday, June 25, 2023, Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger responded to the scene of a residential fire. At approximately 10:30 p.m., he returned home. The next morning, Monday, June 26, 2023, he was found deceased at his residence from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Wildland Firefighter Shaun Luke Daniel, 26, Georgia Forestry Commission.
On Monday, June 5, 2023, Wildland Firefighter Shaun Luke Daniel, while on-duty at a contained wildfire in Washington County, GA, was walking a firebreak and suddenly collapsed. Fellow emergency responders provided CPR on-scene and he was immediately transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Firefighter/Medical First Responder William "Bill" John McCale, 50, of the Vermilion Township Fire & Rescue Department in Vermilion, Ohio.
On Monday, June 5, 2023, Firefighter/Medical First Responder William “Bill” John McCale was attending training and pulled a 5-inch large-diameter hose from the hose bed to connect to the intake when he was found by a fellow firefighter at the pump panel. Medics immediately assisted Firefighter/Medical First Responder McCale to the back of the ambulance. He was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released on Thursday, June 8, 2023. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, Firefighter/Medical First Responder McCale was discovered in his backyard on the ground by his wife. He was immediately transported back to Mercy Regional Medical Center where he passed away a short time later from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Firefighter Bobby “Blue” Smith, 24, of Ware County Fire Rescue in Waycross, Georgia.
On Thursday, June 22, 2023, Firefighter Bobby “Blue” Smith was in a fire apparatus checking fire hydrants with another firefighter when the truck traveled off the roadway onto the west shoulder and lost control. The truck then spun counterclockwise as it flipped across the roadway before hitting a tree and landing on its passenger side in the ditch. Firefighter Bobby “Blue” Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigation into the incident continues.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Firefighter Stuart Guy Hunt, 37, Ancram, NY Volunteer Fire Department.
On Thursday, June 15, 2023, while performing traffic control duties at the scene of a motor vehicle accident, Firefighter Stuart Guy Hunt suffered a medical emergency. Personnel immediately began life saving efforts and was then transported to the hospital, where he passed away a short time later. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., Firefighter Brian Joseph Letrent participated in a fire-department mandated full-scale drill/exercise. On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, while returning home from his job, he suffered a cardiac emergency and was immediately transported to the Bayshore Medical Center where he passed away a short time later.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following Line of Duty Death: Bayville, NJ Volunteer Firefighter Brian Joseph Letrent, age 34.
On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., Firefighter Brian Joseph Letrent participated in a fire-department mandated full-scale drill/exercise. On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, while returning home from his job, he suffered a cardiac emergency and was immediately transported to the Bayshore Medical Center where he passed away a short time later.

The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the following line of duty death. Farmland, IN Volunteer Assistant Chief Kyle Thomas, 29. On Thursday, May 25, 2023, Assistant Chief Kyle Thomas Osgood and Firefighter Zachary Lee were responding to a chicken coop fire in a tanker. The vehicle approached an S-curve, lost control, left the roadway, and crashed. Assistant Chief Osgood was pronounced deceased at the scene. Firefighter Lee was immediately airlifted to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

LODD- 25 year old Firefighter James Muller of the Irmo, SC Fire Department lost his life running to save others in a massive fire at an apartment complex in Columbia. Flames engulfed the building, and the structure collapsed, trapping firefighters inside. 6 other firefighters were transported to the hospital.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Frederick County, VA Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Chester Taylor Lauck, age 66.
On Friday, April 21, 2023, multiple fire and rescue stations from Frederick County, VA and Hampshire County, WV responded to a wildland fire in Frederick County. The wildland fire burned several acres of brush and woods with total incident duration lasting approximately seven hours. Deputy Chief Chester Taylor Lauck was the operator of the Ultra-Terrain Vehicle (UTV) and performed firefighting operations, to include extinguishment with a hose line and applying a fire line. Approximately two hours after arriving home, Deputy Chief Lauck began to feel ill and 9-1-1 was immediately called. He was then transported to a heart specialty center where he was treated. During this time, he suffered multiple heart attacks and was put on life support. After additional diagnostic testing, the family decided to stop all life support. Deputy Chief Lauck passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: North Tazewell, TN Volunteer Captain Roy Sewell, age 27.
On Monday, April 24, 2023, Captain Roy Sewell was responding to an EMS call and to set up a landing zone. While enroute, the apparatus he was driving left the roadway and rolled down a steep embankment. Captain Sewell was fatally injured and was declared deceased at the scene.

The US Fire Administration is reporting the following line of duty death: Chester, C Volunteer Firefighter Fred Fedeler, age 67.
On Saturday, April 22, 2023, Firefighter Fred Fedeler was at the scene of an agricultural facility fire when he suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately treated at the scene and then rushed to the Madison Regional Health System. He passed away a short time later from an apparent heart attack.

The United States Fire Administration is reporting the following Firefighter Fatality: West Virginia Division of Forestry Service Forester Cody J. Mullens, age 28. On Thursday, April 13, 2023, Service Forester Cody J. Mullens was fighting a fire in Fayette County. While at the scene, a tree fell on him, killing him instantly.

The United States Fire Administration is reporting the following Firefighter Fatality: Sussex, NJ Firefighter Anthony Cornelius Duivenvoorde, age 62. On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, Firefighter Anthony “Tony” Cornelius Duivenvoorde responded to two emergency calls; the last response was a fire at a diner. After extinguishment, he returned to the station and went home. At approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening, he was found deceased from an apparent heart attack.

The United States Fire Administration is reporting the following Firefighter Fatality: Abbott, Texas Volunteer Firefighter Horace Dan Wright, age 71. On Friday, April 14, 2023, the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 35. Upon arriving on scene, it was determined to be a stranded vehicle, but the fire department stayed on scene for traffic control until the wrecker arrived.
As Abbott firefighters were repositioning the apparatus, Firefighter Horace Dan Wright, who was assisting with the repositioning, fell and then was struck by the fire apparatus. Firefighters immediately rendered emergency medical care and called for additional emergency services to assist with the incident. Firefighter Wright was flown to Hillcrest Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The United States Fire Administration has reported the following Line of Duty Death: Chicago, IL Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk (55).
On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire at a high-rise building on Lake Shore Drive. While heading down the stairway departing the fire floor, Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk collapsed. He was immediately treated by crews on the scene and transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

The United States Fire Administration has announced the following Line of Duty: Chicago, IL Firefighter/EMT Jermaine A. Pelt (49).
On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 120th and Wallace Street. During the fire attack, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a mayday was called. Firefighter/EMT Jermaine A. Pelt was located by his hose line at about 4:10 a.m. He was immediately transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later.
Two other firefighters were also injured and are listed in stable condition. The fire is believed to have started in the attic of the home, which spread to its two neighboring buildings. The cause of death for Firefighter/EMT Pelt has yet to be determined.

The United States Fire Administration Firefighter has announced the following Fatality. Firefighter Edward Hykel (60) of the West Fire Department in West, TX.
On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the City of West Fire Department and Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers were providing traffic control on I-35N after a vehicle caught on fire. The inside lane was shut down with traffic control devices, a fire truck, and two DPS patrol units. A driver of a Peterbilt tractor trailer traveling on the inside lane struck Firefighter Hykel, the fire truck, and the patrol units. Firefighter Hykel was immediately transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later from his injuries.

The United States Fire Administration has announced the following line of duty death:
Bartow County, GA Firefighter Matthew Brian Smith, age 41. On Thursday, March 16, 2023, Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services (BCFES) Firefighter Matthew Brian Smith became unresponsive during a search and rescue training exercise at the Bartow-Cartersville Fire Joint Training Center. Instructors for the exercise with Firefighter Smith immediately recognized that he was experiencing an acute medical emergency and quickly removed him from the search maze to begin resuscitative measures. Personnel of BCFES immediately began CPR and initiated advanced cardiac life support protocols. BCFES had an on-site ALS ambulance on standby for training and the decision was made for that unit to transport Firefighter Smith to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center. Emergency response personnel, as well as emergency department staff, worked tirelessly to resuscitate Firefighter Smith. He did regain cardiac function and was placed on life support for six days. Regretfully, Firefighter Smith passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, from complications related to his medical emergency. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The United States Fire Administration has announced the following line of duty death: Deptford, NJ Firefighter Jeff M. Pfeiffer, age 66. On Thursday, March 23, 2023, Firefighter Jeff M. Pfeiffer responded to a smoke investigation at the intersection in the town of Deptford. No fire or smoke was found. On the return trip, Firefighter Pfeiffer began to cough. As firefighters arrived at the fire station, the coughing became more aggressive and he began to experience shortness of breath. He had suffered a heart attack. Firefighter Pfeiffer then became unresponsive. He was immediately transported to the hospital where he remained in critical condition. The next day, Friday, March 24, 2023, there was no sign of brain activity and the family made a decision to take him off of life support. Firefighter Jeff M. Pfeiffer was an organ donor and was also the past chief of the department.

The United States Fire Administration has announced the following line of duty death: Chief Minton "Butch" Beach, age 68, of the Oak City, NC Volunteer Fire Department. On Monday, March 13, 2023, Chief Minton “Butch” Beach was attending fire department mandated training at the station. During the training, he starting to feel ill and returned home. A while later, fire department members checked on him and he was still feeling poorly. He was transported to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of Brady, TX Engineer/EMT William "Bill" Fore, age 38. On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, Engineer/EMT William “Bill” Fore was on-duty at the fire station. Fellow firefighters noticed that he missed roll-call at 7:45 a.m. They discovered him severely injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to the Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, TX, where he passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of 2nd Assistant Chief Steve Haskin Harris (56) of the Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Company, Inc in Fort Johnson, NY. On Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023, Assistant Chief Steve "Bullwinkle" Haskin Harris was at the fire station, attending a Super Bowl Party. While at the station, fire department personnel, including Assistant Chief Harris, were “toned out” for a mutual aid structure fire. He left the department to get Engine 4 from their Station 2 (Engine 5 was out of service at Station 1). Assistant Chief Harris drove his privately owned vehicle to Station 2 to retrieve Engine 4. While there, he was met by a fellow firefighter. Both donned their gear when the other firefighter noticed Assistant Chief Harris was experiencing shortness of breath. Both left the station in Engine 4, with Assistant Chief Harris as the passenger, enroute to the structure fire. The other firefighter pulled into Station 1 because Assistant Chief Harris’ condition quickly deteriorated and turned into difficulty breathing. He was immediately transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was intubated. Shortly after, he went into cardiac arrest. Hospital staff were able to get his heart beat back. He remained in critical but stable condition and was flown to Albany Medical Center the next morning, Monday, Feb. 13, 2023. Unfortunately, Assistant Chief Harris went into multi system organ failure and passed away that same morning.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of Virginia Department of Forestry, Forest Technician Rocky S. Wood (54). On Thursday, March 9, 2023, Forest Technician Rocky S. Wood was at the scene of a 15-acre wildfire in Buchanan County. He was scouting the area to determine where to create a containment line around the perimeter of the fire when the ATV he was driving overturned. Forest Technician Wood died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident. He was also the Fire Chief of the Haysi Volunteer Fire Department in Virginia.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of Flint, MI Apparatus Operator Ricky A. Hill, Jr., 49. Firefighter Ricky Hill, Jr. responded with fire crews to a vacant mobile home fire. While at the scene, Firefighter Hill suffered a medical emergency and collapsed. He was transported to Hurley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the Line of Duty Death of Volunteer Lieutenant Ethan M. Quillen, 28, of the Paw Paw, MI Volunteer Fire Department. On Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, Lieutenant Ethan M. Quillen was operating with crews at the scene of trees on fire and wires down due to an ice storm. While at the scene, a tree broke in the vicinity of the incident and caused a power line to collapse and strike Lieutenant Quillen. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the Line of Duty Death of Fire Chief Steven Michael Smith, 46, of the Pebble, AL Volunteer Fire Department. On Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, Chief Steven Michael Smith was responding to a woods fire with a potential residential structure involved. While on his way to the scene, he was involved in a single-vehicle crash in his privately owned vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the Line of Duty Death of Fire Chief Todd J. Yandre, 61, of the Lake Mills, WI Fire Department. On Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, and Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, Chief Todd J. Yandre attended live evolution fire training at the fire station. Later in the evening, on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, Chief Yandre, while at the local gym, collapsed and was pronounced deceased at the scene from an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of Maui County, HI Firefighter Tre’ Evans-Dumaran, 24. On Friday, Jan. 27, 2023, Firefighter Tre’ Evans-Dumaran, while assisting public safety employees, was swept into a storm drain by powerful floodwaters. He was dragged over 800 feet through the drain where it exited into the ocean. He was rescued by his crew, who immediately began resuscitation efforts. Firefighter Evans-Dumaran regained a pulse and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he remained in the critical care unit until his passing on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023.

The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the line of duty death of Gresham, OR career Firefighter/Paramedic Brandon Norbury, age 50. On Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, Firefighter/Paramedic Brandon Norbury was at the training center performing hose evolutions. Afterwards, he was pale and told his co-workers that he didn’t feel well. A short time later, he collapsed and life-saving efforts were immediately performed. He was then rushed to Portland Adventist Hospital where resuscitation efforts continued. He passed away a short time later from cardiac arrest.

Middleport, OH Volunteer Safety Officer Kevin Dailey, 72, passed away from injuries received in a rollover MVA with the fire apparatus on January 24th. From the U.S. Fire Administration:
On Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, Safety Officer Kevin Dailey was returning from a call when the fire apparatus he was driving rolled over the side of a hill and crashed. Safety Officer Dailey was thrown out of the truck, where he was pinned underneath. Other firefighters who were returning from the same call saw the truck on its side and used airbags to lift it and pull him out.
He was flown to the Columbus, OH, hospital where he underwent surgery on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022. Safety Officer Dailey remained in the hospital until his passing on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023. He was also a previous member of the Richland Township Fire Department and former chief of the department.

Clallam County Fire District #3 (Sequim, WA) Captain Charles “Chad” Cate, 46. Couresty of the U.S. Fire Administration:
On Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Captain Charles “Chad” Cate returned to the fire station after responding to a fire alarm activation at a commercial building. Later, at approximately 4:00 a.m., after heading back out to the site of an earlier house fire, he texted a fellow captain and the duty chief to state that all was well at the scene. At 7:00 a.m. that same morning, he was discovered deceased in his bunk by members of his crew when they attempted to wake him. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

Maroa Countryside Fire Protection District, IL Volunteer Firefighter Larry Peasley, 76, passed away on January 4, 2023. From the U.S. Fire Administration:
On Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, a structure fire was reported to the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. The Maroa Countryside Fire Protection District was requested as mutual aid. Chief Larry Peasley arrived at the fire station and was dressing out in fire gear to respond when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. CPR was immediately performed and he was then rushed to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.
